Today, as President of the Delaware County Township Association, I had the honor of being part of a public-private leadership team that kicked off a first of it’s kind series focusing on smart growth in Delaware County. The “Dialogue on Development” event was in partnership with the Delaware County Economic Development Department and Finance Authority. An all-star panel for the event featured Bob Schottenstein (CEO/President of MI Homes), Nelson Yoder (Principal, Crawford Hoying Development), Kenny McDonald (President, One Columbus), and Bob Lamb (Director, Delaware County Economic Development). Former Congressman and President/CEO of the Ohio Business Roundtable, Pat Tiberi, served as the moderator. The goal of this series is to begin the conversation of an overall shared and united vision for Delaware County and the future of our community. In discussing development the first focus and topic for today was zoning. Our panel of experts all shared how zoning can have a positive and negative impact on a community. Some of the key points touched on were how zoning effects growth in a community, the necessary communication between public and private sectors, and what changes are needed in order to facilitate smart growth. A wide variety of representatives and elected leaders from our townships, villages, and cities throughout Delaware attended. As the fastest growing county in Ohio, it is critical we continue down the path of smart growth and sustain our economic momentum. The overwhelming take away from today was the importance of dialogue and open discussion. I look forward to announcing our next event soon.
